With over 26 years of experience in gastroenterology, Dr. Tamer Atassi is a board-certified specialist who delivers high-quality digestive care with a personalized touch. He sees patients at three convenient locations: New Lenox, Oak Brook, and Oak Lawn, through Southwest Gastroenterology, a division of GI Partners of Illinois. There, he combines clinical expertise with a patient-centered approach to improve outcomes and patient comfort.

Dr. Atassi began his medical journey at the University of Damascus Faculty of Human Medicine, where he earned his medical degree in 1993. Then, he completed his internal medicine residency at Indiana University Health in 1999. To further specialize, he pursued a fellowship in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Johns Hopkins University, which he completed in 2002.

Throughout his career, Dr. Atassi has focused on diagnosing and treating a wide variety of gastrointestinal conditions. These include GERD and acid reflux, ulcer disease, pancreatic disorders, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), colon cancer screening, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), liver disease, and biliary disorders. Thanks to his extensive experience, he provides tailored and comprehensive care to meet each patient’s specific needs.

In addition to his clinical skills, Dr. Atassi is fluent in both English and Arabic. This, in turn, allows him to connect with a diverse patient population and ensure that every patient feels heard, respected, and comfortable. In addition, he conducts thorough evaluations and explains diagnoses and treatment plans in a clear and understandable way. As a result, patients often praise him for his compassionate care and strong communication.
