Dr. Charles Berkelhammer began his medical journey at the University of Toronto, where he completed his medical degree. Then, he moved to the University of Chicago for his residency training, gaining valuable experience in internal medicine.
Today, he serves as a Clinical Professor at the University of Illinois, where he teaches and mentors medical students and residents. Over the years, he has written more than 50 medical articles, contributing to research and advancing the field of gastroenterology.
Dr. Berkelhammer has earned recognition for both his patient care and teaching. Chicago Magazine named him one of the “Top Doctors” in 2001, and again in 2021 through 2025. In addition, he has received an impressive 15 Teacher of the Year awards, reflecting his dedication to education and excellence.
He holds board certifications in both Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology, showing his deep knowledge and commitment to high professional standards.
Dr. Berkelhammer treats a wide range of gastrointestinal conditions. However, he has a special interest in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), liver disease, celiac disease, and esophageal disorders. He brings both expertise and compassion to every patient he sees.
